Police officers assigned to the Patrol Division investigate motor vehicle accidents and enforce both state laws and Town ordinances. Patrol officers are the first responders to most calls for service within the town and are the most visible part of our department.
The Patrol Division is composed of five squads under the leadership of a captain and two lieutenants. Four patrol squads, each led by a sergeant and staffed with two officers, are supplemented by two mid-shift officers to provide additional coverage. The division also includes a Special Operations unit consisting of a sergeant, two traffic officers, and two K-9 officers assigned during peak hours.
Patrol squads work twelve-hour shifts on a modified DuPont schedule: work Monday–Tuesday, off Wednesday–Thursday, work Friday–Sunday, off Monday–Tuesday, work Wednesday–Thursday, off Friday–Sunday. Squads rotate between day and night shifts every 28 days, ensuring continuous, 24-hour service to the citizens of Zebulon.
